|

|
Last issue was about rules changing. This week it's about where companies look for their next growth engine. Celltrion, built on biosimilars, licensed a preclinical antibody. AstraZeneca added a fifth indication to Ultomiris, a drug it already sells. AbbVie took a pipeline candidate through phase 3, hit the primary endpoint and still fell short of what the market wanted. Whether a result counts as a success depends on expectations and on what you're compared with. So how do the three plans stack up?

๐ค Word of the Week
Lifecycle management
a.k.a. growing a marketed drug's value and lifespan
Lifecycle management means keeping a drug's value and sales life growing after launch, through new indications, new formulations or dosing routes, and new patient groups. Developing a brand-new drug takes a lot of money and time, while a drug with a safety record can often be extended more efficiently, so large pharma companies have long used this approach. This week's Ultomiris reached its fifth US indication by moving from rare complement diseases into IgA nephropathy.
New indication โ "same drug, new disease" ๐ฏ
A drug that is already approved shows benefit in another disease or patient group, and its label widens. Ultomiris adding IgAN is an example.
New drug โ "new medicine, from scratch" ๐ฅ
Discovery, preclinical work and phase 1 to 3 trials all have to be done from the start. It takes more time and money, and the risk of failure is higher.

From Biosimilars to New Drugs? Celltrion Licenses Kaigene's KG013 for Up to $580.5M
Fierce Biotech ยท Celltrion ร Kaigene | Oct 22, 2026
Key Facts
Celltrion has licensed KG013, a preclinical autoimmune antibody, from Maryland-based Kaigene in a deal worth up to $580.5M. The upfront payment was not disclosed, and Kaigene is also eligible for milestones plus royalties on net sales. KG013 targets APRIL, a signalling protein involved in plasma cell survival and immunoglobulin production, with the aim of cutting the production of disease-causing antibodies. Its first indication is IgA nephropathy (IgAN), and Kaigene keeps an option to co-market it in South Korea.
Plain-English Breakdown ๐งฉ
Celltrion built its business on biosimilars, the copycat versions of blockbusters such as Remicade, Rituxan and Humira, and in recent years it has been moving into innovative medicines through antibody licensing deals. Last November it agreed to pay up to $744M for Kaigene's FcRn inhibitor KG006 and dual-acting antibody KG002, with $8M upfront. This deal follows the same formula: secure preclinical candidates early, then pay as results arrive. From a management view, it is a company using strengths it already has, in manufacturing, development and commercialisation, to buy its next growth engine.
๐ Global Lens
IgAN is especially common in Asian populations: the company cites about 30,000 patients in South Korea, against about 160,000 diagnosed in the US. Kaigene's CEO said Celltrion's global manufacturing, development and commercialisation infrastructure was part of why it was chosen as a partner.
Why it matters for your career: BD and licensing teams need people who can screen preclinical assets and structure milestone-heavy deals, and portfolio strategy and finance teams need people who can value assets this early.

One Drug, Five Diseases? AstraZeneca's Ultomiris Wins Accelerated FDA Approval in IgA Nephropathy
Fierce Pharma ยท AstraZeneca press release | Oct 21, 2026
Key Facts
On 21 October AstraZeneca's rare-disease unit Alexion announced FDA accelerated approval for Ultomiris (ravulizumab) to reduce proteinuria in adults with primary IgA nephropathy (IgAN) at risk of disease progression. In a prespecified interim analysis of the phase 3 I CAN trial, urine protein fell by 46.6% on Ultomiris and 5.6% on placebo at 34 weeks, a placebo-adjusted effect of 43.4%. It is Ultomiris's fifth US indication.
Plain-English Breakdown ๐งฉ
Accelerated approval rests on proteinuria, a surrogate marker, not on proof that the drug slows kidney function decline. That is still to be shown: I CAN's eGFR result at week 106 is meant to support full approval, and this path is common in IgAN. The market is already crowded, with Calliditas's Tarpeyo, Travere's Filspari and Novartis's Fabhalta on sale and more candidates waiting. Ultomiris brings a different mechanism as a C5 complement inhibitor, while Fabhalta is also a complement inhibitor but targets Factor B. Alexion joined AstraZeneca in a $39B acquisition in 2020, and Ultomiris made $4.7B in global sales in 2025, up 19% at constant currency. Adding indications to a drug that already sells is the textbook case of lifecycle management.
๐ Global Lens
Reviews are also under way in Japan and other countries, and the sources give no Korean timeline. AstraZeneca planned to present late-breaking I CAN results at ASN Kidney Week on 23 October.
Why it matters for your career: Product strategy and brand teams plan which indications to pursue and in what order, and development and medical teams design the confirmatory trials that accelerated approvals depend on.
๐ Instead of inventing another drug, keep adding diseases to the one that already sells. โ Fierce Pharma summary
A Phase 3 Win That Still Disappoints: AbbVie's Lutikizumab Hits Its Endpoint, and a Rival Falls 35%
Fierce Biotech ยท AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV) | Oct 22, 2026
Key Facts
AbbVie's lutikizumab, which targets IL-1ฮฑ and IL-1ฮฒ, met the primary endpoint in the phase 3 Intrepid trial in hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). The trial randomised 1,400 patients to the subcutaneous drug or placebo. At week 16, 31.4% on lutikizumab reached HiSCR75 (at least a 75% reduction in abscesses and inflammatory nodules), against 23.4% on placebo. The result was statistically significant, but the 8.0-point gap was well short of phase 2, which showed up to 45.9% against 17.5%.
Plain-English Breakdown ๐งฉ
The market reacted at once. H.C. Wainwright analysts had set the bar for competitive differentiation at 45% to 50% HiSCR75 with a gap of at least 25 points over placebo, and lutikizumab came nowhere near either. Shares in Avalo, which is developing an IL-1ฮฒ antibody, fell 35% to $8 in early trading. BMO was calmer: the safety profile is clean, all eight ranked secondary endpoints were hit, including pain and flares, and it could offer an alternative mechanism. Rivals include Merck's tulisokibart (up to 27% placebo-adjusted in phase 2b) and UCB's Bimzelx (20%). AbbVie will report 36-week extension data in 2027 and plans to file in the second half of that year.
๐ Global Lens
The article has no Korean angle, but the lesson travels to every market: a readout is judged against rivals' data and investors' expectations, not only against placebo.
Why it matters for your career: Competitive intelligence, market research and investor relations teams build the benchmarks a result is judged against, and clinical development teams need to set expectations with them from the start.
๐ A win on the primary endpoint is not the same as a win in the market. โ Fierce Biotech summary

๐ 3 Stocks That Moved This Week
Direction and catalyst, sketched โ not exact prices. Check a real chart for that.
|
Celltrion KRX: 068270 |
|
โ Flat |
The KG013 licence is a preclinical deal with an undisclosed upfront, so it reads more as a signal of Celltrion's push into new drugs than as a near-term earnings event. The article gives no share-price reaction, so it is shown as flat. Hiring signal: watch BD, licensing and portfolio strategy roles. (Directional sketch.)
|
AstraZeneca LSE: AZN |
|
โ Flat |
Ultomiris's IgAN approval adds a fifth indication to a drug that made $4.7B in 2025. The article gives no share-price reaction, so it is shown as flat. Hiring signal: look for product strategy, medical affairs and renal development roles. (Directional sketch.)
|
Avalo NASDAQ: AVTX |
|
โฝ Down |
Shares fell 35% to about $8 in early trading as AbbVie's phase 3 result shook the HS race, according to the article. Avalo is developing an IL-1ฮฒ antibody. (Directional sketch.)
๐ Why this pattern
This week the only share move the sources confirm is Avalo's 35% fall. Even when a trial "succeeds", a result below rivals and expectations can shake other companies in the race. Celltrion and AstraZeneca had no price reaction in the articles, so they are shown flat. (All directional sketches: check a real chart for exact prices.)
